The Cay Sal Bank is a little known area of the Bahamas just 55 miles south of Florida and 30 miles north of Cuba. The bank has been described as a coral atoll some 40 miles across and surrounded by beautiful, rocky cays and reefs. To the north is the Gulf Stream, once marked by a lighthouse on the northwest side of the Bank built in 1839 by the British Imperial Lighthouse Service.
No one lives on the Cay Sal Bank, although the island of Cay Sal itself has a very interesting history. In the early 1950s a group of avid sport fisherman created the Cay Sal Aeromarine Club. The group built an airstrip and marina, club house and cottages along a beautiful beach with rows of majestic coconut palms. The interesting part is who was in the club including Ernest Hemingway and after Castro came to power in Cuba, the notorious Howard Hughes. Hughes was front man for the Americans as the island was used to spy on Cuba in the days before satellites. Today the island is barren.
