Long Island runs some 60 miles from north to south and is located between the Exumas to the northwest and Crooked and Acklins to the southeast. The length of the island features lovely, remote beaches on both the deep, windy Atlantic side (to the east) and on the protected, relatively calm and shallow side (to the west). The Great Bahamas Bank ends here while stretching all the way to Bimini, a couple hundred miles northwest. The Crooked Island Passage, a major shipping route, runs by the southeast side of the island while the north end faces Exuma Sound. The islands of Rum Cay, San Salvador and Conception Island Land and Sea Park can be found off the northern shore, along with Cat Island.

Cape Santa Maria is located on the north end of Long Island and is the second place that Columbus stopped on his voyage to the new world in 1492. There is a plaque commemorating that event and a lovely beach resort which shares the name, Cape Santa Maria. South of that is Stella Maris, the oldest dive resort in the Bahamas with a marina and well tended airport, both with fuel. Offshore there are excellent reefs and some wrecks to dive. Numerous towns of interest dot the long highway down the island and Salt Pond features the fishing industry. Dean’s Blue Hole has gained international fame for the deep, free diving records set there. The blue hole is 660 feet deep, and is the deepest blue hole in the Bahamas. Clarence Town in the south has two, beautiful churches up on the hill overlooking the harbour, with restaurants and the most southerly marina in the Bahamas offering fuel, Flying Fish.
