The island of New Providence is home to the nation’s capital, Nassau, by far the largest city in the Bahamas with over 250,000 residents, about 70% of the overall Bahamian population. The island is 21 miles long and several miles in width with a natural harbour on the north side protected by Paradise Island. This harbour is home to numerous marinas, resorts and Prince George Wharf, which accommodates a fleet of cruise ships that visit from the U.S. The international airport is up to world standards along with an increasing number of good roads and services that have greatly improved in recent years. An increasing number of world class communities and resorts have been built in recent years, gaining international attention.

New Providence is located centrally with Andros Island to the west, the Exumas and Eleuthera to the east and the Berry Islands, Abaco and Grand Bahama (Freeport) to the north. The island has many cultural sites to visit including forts, historic buildings and churches dating back hundreds of years. Lodging opportunities run from 5 star to economical and shopping is the same. Inexpensive gifts can be purchased at the straw market on Bay Street while expensive jewelry and other items are available just down the street. The island has an increasing number of fine restaurants and other attractions. While the population may be large, the resources offshore are still attractive. Sport fishing can be good and diving opportunities are excellent. Nassau also serves as the jumping off point to the many smaller islands, as international flights arrive here with connections around the country.
