These two islands lie in the southern Bahamas, a solitary area with endless beaches where you can go days without seeing another boat – or another person. Crooked and Acklins are separated from Long Island by the Crooked Island Passage, a major shipping route marked by two historic lighthouses, Castle Rock at the southwest tip of Acklins (built in 1868) and Bird Rock (1876) off the northwest tip of Crooked. Between the two islands is a smaller island, Long Cay (pronounced “key” in the Bahamas), which was an important shipping station in the late 1800s.

Besides miles of pristine beaches, Crooked and Acklins boast excellent bone fishing, interesting historic ruins and creeks that run into blue holes and caves. The Bight of Acklins is a huge, shallow water body that separates the two islands and is also known for it bone fishing. Like many islands in the southern Bahamas, the populations have dwindled for a century as their youth find better jobs in Nassau or America. Because of this, the people remaining are friendly and appreciative of what the few tourists visiting these lovely islands can bring.
